HTML5 Textmate Bundle

If you’re like me and you get tired of scrolling through thousands of lines of HTML5 markup in TextMate, then it’s probably time to download the HTML5 Bundle by John Muhl, so you can focus on coding again and collapose those damned <headers>, <sections> and <footers>!

Download it in Terminal!

If you’re a Front-end Web Developer and you’re not using SASS, It’s probably time you consider it for your local environment. LESS.js is also another great option, but requires an additional step that’s less friendly for collecting the output since it’s compiled client-side.

If you don’t think variables, nesting or mixins are valuable when developing CSS, you’re bat-shit crazy! SASS creates efficiencies so you can code less and sleep or drink more.

In terms of getting started, you really have no excuses: Launch Terminal and type “gem insall sass” - That’s it! If you’re wondering “what next?”, visit sass-lang.com for easy examples of the SASS syntax.

One thing to note that isn’t completely obvious is controlling the output style when watching/outputting your scss files. For this to work just type (in terminal):

“sass —style OutputStyleName —watch file.scss:file.css

Rapid sprite to CSS building

I found the quickest way to go from building sprites in Photoshop to CSS was to use the object select and info window. Originally, I used the slice tool to find the edges of the sprite object, then review the width/height and drop them in my stylesheet.

This approach is much easier. Select the object (option + right click), then hit “cmd + t” to get exact coordinates to the object (ex: x: 200 y: 24). Drop those digits in your stylesheet and you’re good to go.

Paul Irish came up with a brilliant IE conditional setup. No need for extra stylesheets! Drop this in after your doctype and target .ie6, .ie7 and .ie8 in your main CSS.

Today marks the day that I officially launched my weblog.

Anyone that knows me, would probably say “it’s about bloody time” and I completely agree. Though there’s still much to be done, including a design facelift and feature update, I’m really happy with the current launch.
